ROARY THE LION

Roary the Lion: A Futuristic Jungle Float for a Greener Future

As part of our continued commitment to sustainable carnival design, Roary the Lion roared back to life in 2025 — not just as a float, but as a symbol of creative restoration, teamwork, and eco-conscious innovation.

As part of our continued commitment to sustainable carnival design, Roary the Lion roared back to life in 2025 not just as a float, but as a symbol of creative restoration, teamwork, and eco-conscious innovation.

Originally a neglected and rusting structure, Roary was transformed into a spectacular “Futuristic Jungle” float for Luton International Carnival 2025, combining mechanical ingenuity with lush natural design. Under the artistic leadership of our 2025 Lead Artist, and with Lee and her team of volunteers (the Priscilla Crew) at the heart of the build, this project brought together creativity, sustainability, and community in action.

A Restoration Rooted in Reuse

Every component of Roary’s transformation was guided by a zero-waste philosophy. Aside from a small amount of paint, 100% of the materials used were donated or reclaimed.

Key sustainability highlights:

  • Canvas & Frame: Rust-treated, sealed, and repainted no replacements needed

  • Handles: Hand-carved from scrap wood

  • Wheels: Serviced and pumped, not replaced

  • Mane: Carefully brushed out and preserved

  • Base Décor: Recycled art panels and reused materials

Even Roary’s missing foot was given a second life — sculpted from foam and seamlessly integrated into the design.

Behind the Build: The Team that Brought Roary Back

Roary’s revival was made possible by a talented and dedicated team who brought both artistic vision and hands-on craftsmanship to the project. Under the creative direction of our 2025 Lead Artist and with Lee leading on structural and aesthetic work, the transformation came to life through the energy and commitment of the Priscilla Crew a group of volunteers who worked regularly on the float and managed logistics, installations, and movement on the day. David (Utopia Mas) added key visual elements and structural repairs, while Reka, an external contributor, donated beautifully repurposed art panels that added striking detail to the float’s base. Together, this team combined creativity, care, and sustainable practice to ensure Roary roared again greener and more powerful than ever.

Low-Tech, Low-Waste, High Impact

What makes Roary’s restoration special isn't just the result, it’s how it was done.

  • All work was powered by human hands, not machines

  • Rust was treated using chemical removers, not replaced with new parts

  • Paint was mixed on-site, reducing waste from failed tests

  • Movement was fully manual and choreographed for the parade; no motors, no emissions

These low-impact fabrication choices reflect our commitment to practical sustainability, minimal waste, and creative efficiency.

Carnival Day: Roary on the Move

On the day of Luton International Carnival 2025, Roary took to the streets in full glory rolled forward by a human-powered float mobility team led by members of the Priscilla Crew.

The result? A living, moving piece of art that captured imaginations and embodied what a Greener Carnival Future can truly look like.

Thank You to All Involved

We extend our heartfelt thanks to every volunteer, partner, and contributor who brought Roary back to life. This float stands as a shining example of how collaboration, creativity, and sustainable values can combine to make something unforgettable.

Together, we’ve proven that even a forgotten lion can roar again louder, greener, and stronger than ever.
