Abolition Project
In 2007, UKCCA, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, embarked on a magical musical journey to explore the role and significance of the African roots of carnival music to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the parliamentary abolition of slavery.
This 12 month project culminated in a powerful performance involving 50 young people from local schools participating in the spectrum of carnival arts. Music, mas and movement were all harnessed to tell the moving story of how carnival music developed and how it owed much to the musical traditions of the trans-Atlantic slaves.
The project also documented the influence of black music in UK post the arrival of immigrants from the Caribbean on the SS Windrush. A resource pack and film has been produced to accompany this project. The suggested activities in this section are targeted towards Key Stage 2.
