Mayor to Launch Mas Camp Season - starting the preparation for Carnival 2012
This Saturday, February 18th, UKCCA is welcoming everyone to Centre for an afternoon full of music, dance and carnival activities. This ‘Arts and Heritage Day’ from 12.00 until 16.00 will be packed full of workshops, story-telling and opportunities for all Lutonions to share carnival memories.
Mayor of Luton, Don Worlding, Pax Nindi, Creative Director and Patricia Dixon, Head of Learning and Participation at UKCCA and a representative from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be greeting Luton’s major carnival bands to the event and talking to people about creating carnival for this year’s spectacular celebration for the Olympic Torch festivities.
The event will bring families together to get everyone, children, young people, parents and grandparents to participate in everything that is fun about carnival.
The day will launch UKCCA’s major regional digital Carnival Archive project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This project is creating the first digital archive for carnival in the UK. It’s about Collecting, capturing, preserving and sharing the heritage of carnival and street celebrations in the Eastern region. Luton has a rich history of carnival and there are lots of fantastic carnival creations to be celebrated.
Local Artists JP Courtney will be running workshops in Samba, Toke Lettman for Dance and Kiran Patel will doing workshops in Headdress making. Workshops will start from 12.00 and will run every half an hour until 16.00.
You don’t have to be a seasoned ‘carnivalist’ to go along, there will be something for everyone.
The event is funded through the Adult and Community Learning Fund, as part of the Digital Carnival Arts Project and Heritage Lottery Fund, as part of Carnival Archive Project.
